Aluminum alloys can be categorized into a number of groups based on the particular material’s characteristics such as its ability to respond to thermal and mechanical treatment and the primary alloying element added to the aluminum alloy.

Aluminum Alloy Designations: Aluminum alloys usually have a 4-digit designation. The first digit designates purity or alloy type. The second digit indicates modifications of the alloy. Only in 1xxx series the third and fourth digits indicate the purity. For example, 1050 indicates an aluminum with 99.50% purity.

Oct 23, 2020 · Aluminum (Al), also spelled aluminium, chemical element, a lightweight silvery white metal of main Group 13 (IIIa, or boron group) of the periodic table. Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element in Earth ’s crust and the most widely used nonferrous metal.

An aluminum alloy is a chemical composition where other elements are added to pure aluminum in order to enhance its properties, primarily to increase its strength. These other elements include iron, silicon, copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc at levels that combined may make up as much as 15 percent of the alloy by weight. Alloys are assigned a four-digit number, in which the first digit identifies …

In the 1000 series of aluminum, the last 2 digits provide the minimum aluminum percentage above 99%. For example the classification 1325 translates 99.50% minimum aluminum. In all other cases, the three digits after the first number may signify either different properties or other additives to the metal.

Although aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust, it is never found free in nature. All of the earth's aluminum has combined with other elements to form compounds. Two of the most common compounds are alum, such as potassium aluminum sulfate (KAl(SO 4) 2 ·12H 2 O), and aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3).About 8.2% of the earth's crust is composed of aluminum.
